Games [4Diversity] wins Annie Brouwer-Korf Award 2019
Games [4Diversity] won the Annie Brouwer-Korf Award 2019! The ABK Award (Annie Brouwer-Korf Prijs) is an award for organizations that contribute to the acceptation & visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in Utrecht.
Mrs. Annie Brouwer-Korf (1946 – 2017) was the mayor of Utrecht from 1999 to 2008. In that period she has been particularly committed to the rights of the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals of the city of Utrecht and far beyond.
Since 2007, the Annie Brouwer-Korf prize has therefore been awarded annually to the people who, just like them, are making a strong commitment to the acceptance and visibility of the pink community in Utrecht during Midzomergracht festival. In honor of her retirement as mayor in 2007 she was the first winner of the prize.
Games [4Diversity]’s efforts for LGBTQ+ representation
Games [4Diversity] received the award during Pridemonth 2019, and was selected by the jury for its contributions to the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in games and the game industry. Games [4Diversity] provides game developers ways to add more diversity to their games: the foundation wants to see a broader range of game characters and stories.
By organizing game jams, Games [4Diversity] facilitates a dialogue between game makers and players. Another mission of G4div is to improve the visibility of LGBTQ+ game developers, changing the common misperception that the game industry consists only of straight white men. By organizing a game boat on the Utrecht Pride, the game industry can show its colors.
The jury of the ABK Award commented that Games [4Diversity] was chosen because of the unique, innovative, and accessible way they reach their young target group.
We are honored to receive this award, and would like to thank the jury, Midzomergracht festival, and the Municipality of Utrecht (Gemeente Utrecht).
And of course, thanks to our volunteers, all the companies that supported us in the past 4 years + everyone that attended our events!
